GM mulls 1.2-litre engine for Aveo U-VA

Mayur N. Shah

Mumbai , June 22

General Motors India (GM) is toying with the idea of introducing the Aveo's forthcoming model, U-VA, with a 1.2-litre engine rather than the 1.4-litre engine, as announced earlier.

According to Mr Ankush Arora, Vice-President (Marketing), the plans have not been finalised yet and the company is considering all options.

Introduction of the vehicle with a 1.2 litre-engine is primarily due to the tax sops (reduction in excise duty from 24 per cent to 16 per cent) on petrol cars that do not exceed four m in length and whose engine capacity is not beyond 1,200 cc.

These tax sops were introduced in Budget 2006. If introduced with the proposed engine, the Aveo hatchback variant is likely to be priced aggressively in the market against existing competitors such as the Hyundai Getz and the Maruti Swift.

It would be the sole model that could avail of the existing tax sops in the B plus segment; the Getz and the Swift have 1.3-litre engines.

In order to avail of the same tax sops, Fiat is planning to de-tune its Palio hatchback variant with 1,242 cc engine displacement, according to industry sources.

The Aveo U-VA was expected to hit the market in June but as the management is still undecided on the engine capacity, the launch period has been delayed.
