Chennai , June 22

Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd is in discussions with various States for land for its proposed expansion of vehicle manufacturing capacity. The company is also looking to set up a research and development centre for which Tamil Nadu is a likely choice.

As part of this exercise, a team of executives from the company, led by its Vice-Chairman and Managing Director, Mr Anand Mahindra, and consisting of Dr Pawan Goenka, the President (Automotive Sector) and Member of the Group Management Board, and Mr Arun Nanda, Vice-Chairman, Mahindra World City Developers Ltd, called on the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Mr M. Karunanidhi, at the Secretariat on Thursday.

When contacted, Dr Goenka said the company was looking at increasing plant capacity for the vehicles manufactured by it, including the utility vehicles and a passenger car. In this connection, Mahindra & Mahindra was in discussion with various States, he said, but declined to name them.

It was in this connection that the Mahindra & Mahindra officials called on the Chief Minister and other officials. The company had looked at sites near Oragadam, at the outskirts of Chennai.

Dr Goenka said the company was also looking at setting up an R&D Centre, which would be spread over 130 acres. The Mahindra World City, set up by a group company at Maraimalai Nagar, about 30 km south of Chennai, was a likely location for this R&D Centre, he said.

This centre, he said, would carry out research and development activities for all of the company's vehicle sectors - tractors, utility vehicles, trucks and passenger cars - and also for some of the joint ventures and other customers.
