Shipping Corporate - Outlook FACT reviews safety measures at Kochi port Our Bureau
Kochi , June 23 FACT has reviewed the safety measures at its sulphur and rock phosphate handling and storage facility at the Cochin Port Trust premises in the wake of a fire at the facility last week. The fire at the Q-10 berth of the port had partially damaged the conveyor system and destroyed a minimum quantity of sulphur discharged from the vessel Stella Teresa anchored in the berth. The fire broke out during discharge of cargo due to friction in the conveyor system. It was brought under control after about three hours with the help of fire tenders and two fire tugs from the Kochi port.
Safety measures
The sulphur handling facility on Q-10 of the Ernakulam wharf has been a captive facility for FACT. The company officials said adequate safety arrangements had been made at the facility after the incident. Besides having a sprinkler system in place, there is also a fire tender posted at the facility 24 hours for meeting any emergency. An electronic detection system is in place to detect the presence of sulphur dioxide.
