Rains play spoilsport

The IAF flight carrying the Prime Minister could not land in Mangalore due to poor visibility and inclement weather.

Mangalore , June 23

Rains played spoilsport for the foundation stone laying ceremony of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation's (ONGC) petrochemicals complex in Mangalore on Friday.

The Prime Minster, Dr Manmohan Singh, who was flying from Delhi in a special flight of Indian Air Force, was scheduled to land at Mangalore airport at 11.35 a.m. But the flight could not land in Mangalore due to poor visibility and inclement weather.

Announcing the decision of the deferment of the foundation stone laying ceremony through the public address system, Mr R.S. Sharma, Acting Chairman of ONGC, said, "I have deep regrets to announce deferment of this programme. The Prime Minister wants to be here again to lay foundation stone for the project. I have been advised to announce the deferment of the programme and not cancellation."

Mr Sharma added that the flight of the Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Mr Murli Deora, from Mumbai, could also not land at the airport at 8.40 a.m. due to inclement weather conditions.

Stating that ONGC has a large vision and investment plans for Mangalore, he said the petrochemicals complex would be the precursor of a chain of investments envisaged in the Mangalore Special Economic Zone.

The Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board, the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services Ltd are the other equity partners in the Mangalore SEZ.
