Motorola to expand R&D units' strength

Our Bureau

New Delhi , June 23

Motorola India Private Ltd said on Friday that it plans to increase the number of engineers at its research and development centres in Bangalore and Hyderabad from 3,500 to 4,000 by 2007.

Speaking at the launch of the Moto Pebl handsets in four new colours, Mr Lloyd Mathias, Director Marketing of Motorola India Pvt Ltd said, "R&D in India is important, firstly, because the country has a great technological base, and secondly, it is the second fastest growing market in the world after China. We will be increasing our focus in that area."

Mr Mathias said that the expansion was being done since 40 per cent of the software used by the company came from the R&D centres in India. He also informed that Motorola's manufacturing unit in Tamil Nadu would be functional by the first quarter of 2007.

New models

Motorola unveiled Moto Pebl in four new colours of orange, pink, blue and green besides the already existing black and red models. The handsets will be priced at Rs 10,500. The company is planning to launch its new model, `Moto Rokr', before the end of the year. Moto Rokr is being touted as an entertainment phone that will go heavy on the music department, with MP3 downloading facilities.
