Seminar on petroleum adulteration

Our Bureau

Chennai, June 24

A day-long seminar addressing issues related to the adulteration of petroleum products will be held here on June 26. Organised by Centre for Consumer Education Research Training and Testing (CONCERT), it will dwell on aspects like effects of adulteration on engine performance, pollution and tackling diversion of kerosene. According to Mr R Desikan, Trustee, CONCERT, 15-20 per cent of petroleum products sold in Chennai are adulterated. Citing a test conducted on 157 retail outlets in Chennai during March-April 2005, he said 15-20 per cent of samples tested were suspected of adulteration. "The main reason for this is the price difference between adulterants and fuels. We are recommending a reduction in this price difference to curb adulteration," he said. Other recommendations include revising Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) quality control rules. He said that NGOs could work with the Government to set up independent research and testing labs across the country.
