The Hindu Business Line : Unesco to support Akshaya e-project

As per the proposal made, Unesco will undertake content development activities that will enable social and cultural empowerment of women. Content related to legal guidance, career guidance, government schemes, health, motherhood and child would be developed through selected Akshaya centres. Research and training also would form part of this programme. In the second phase, income generation activities through women groups under the Akshaya centres are envisaged.

PILOT PROJECT

Unesco will undertake a pilot project in Kannur. About 15 to 20 Akshaya centres would be selected in the beginning and capacity building exercises initiated. Apart from Unesco, the UNDP, the University of Adelaide and the Queensland University of Technology are associated with this the venture.

Unesco had earlier hosted consultations on the theme of `Innovating ICT applications for poverty reduction' in Delhi and Akshaya was among those invited. Women empowerment was the core theme of the deliberations. Representatives from different Asian countries participated in the consultations.

While presenting a paper, Mr T.K. Manzoor, State Coordinator of Akshaya, highlighted the potential of tapping the idle women force of the State into productive levels through Akshaya.

Akshaya was started in Malappuram district as a pilot project but since has been rolled out to seven districts. E-literacy activities are going on in these districts. Preliminary efforts to extend the project across the entire State have begun.
