Sivaganga farmers urged to take up drip irrigation

IOB to provide 75 pc assistance

Padamathur,

Sivaganga Dist. (TN), June 26

, More sugar mills could be started in the Sivaganga district if the farmers took to new irrigation methods such as drip and sprinkler methods, said the Union Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, at the valedictory function of the Farmers' Conference on Irrigation Methods jointly organised by the Indian Overseas Bank and Sakthi Sugar Mills here on Sunday.

Stating that he was impressed by the efforts of the agriculturists in the Bharamathy district of Maharashtra where they have taken to drip irrigation that has helped to establish many sugar mills in the area, a similar effort could help transform the lifeline of the district as the by-products from sugarcane could create new opportunities for earnings.

In this connection, he pointed out the production of ethanol from molasses and mixing it with petrol would help to bring down fuel costs. Those with five acres of land in the district can take to drip irrigation and Indian Overseas Bank and Sakthi Sugar Mills are willing to help the farmers. They can enjoy subsidy from the Centre and the mill for the purpose and 75 per cent of assistance will be come from the bank, he said.
