Hyderabad, June 26

The President, Mr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, will inaugurate the Bhubaneshwar centre of the Hyderabad-based L.V. Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) on July 3. The institute is also opening another tertiary eye care centre in Visakhapatnam on July 7.

"These two centres will be linked to other eye hospitals in the region, serving as a referral resources centres," an LVPEI press release said. The institute has trained doctors, paramedics and staff required for other services for the last one year.

"Both centres will start seeing patients from early next month," it said. The institute received funds from international non-governmental organisations such as Operation Eyesight Universal (Canada) and multinationals such as BHP Billiton of Australia in setting up the two centres.
