Kolkata , June 27 The $13-billion turnover BenQ Corporation of Taiwan, a global major in computing products, digital media and mobile business, will launch its range of LCD colour televisions in the Indian market "sometime during the fourth quarter of 2006", according to Mr Robert Dung, BenQ's Managing Director, in-charge of the group's operations in India, West Asia and Africa. Speaking to Business Line while on a visit to Kolkata to launch a range of dual-branded BenQ-Siemens mobile handsets, Mr Dung said the company's product offerings in India included IT components and products, digital cameras, projectors, scanners and laptops. During the fourth quarter of the current calendar year, BenQ would position its offerings in the growing Indian market for LCD televisions. Mr Dung, however, ruled out the setting up of a manufacturing facility in India in the immediate future.
Major market
According to him, BenQ was present in 73 countries across the globe. India had been identified as a major market for IT products, consumer electronics and mobile handsets. Following the buyout of the mobile handset business from Siemens in October last year, the company here on Tuesday launched four new handsets under the BenQ-Siemens brand. These handsets, which are targeted at specific segments such as music, metal phones and sliders, have been priced in the Rs 6,000-16,000 range. These handsets are manufactured in BenQ's manufacturing facilities located in China, Taiwan and Germany. "Our addressable market in India comprises 40 per cent of the total market for mobile phones. We want to be among the top-five players in the segments that we would be present in," Mr Dung said, and added that the company proposes to launch eight more handset models in India by the end of December 2006. By 2007, the company hopes to garner a three per cent share of the overall Indian market for mobile handsets. Also, by that time, 40 per cent of BenQ India's revenue would be accounted for by sales of mobile phones. Mr Dung declined to disclose BenQ India's turnover target for 2006. He, however, said BenQ Corporation's global turnover in 2006 was expected to be about $20 billion.
