Logistics - Air Cargo
Two-tier truck

Lufthansa Cargo, the cargo carrier of the German airline, has started providing road feeder services (RFFs) through a two-tier truck, a new type of vehicle that allows cargo pallets to be loaded on two levels thus reducing the number of trips required for cargo transportation around Europe. The truck is able to accommodate up to seven pallets depending on the size and make-up of the palletised freight and is equipped with a flexible and automatic lifting system. The equipment upgrade is intended to optimise load capacity on the RFS operations by raising per trip capacity up to 75 per cent, and thus reducing the previous capacity losses in pallet transportation. It took nearly two years to develop the prototype and launch the vehicle, requiring close cooperation between the cargo carrier, haulage contractor and a handling agency firm which funded the project.
