Incessant rains over the last few days have caused havoc in the border districts of Vizianagaram and Srikakulam, forcing authorities to evacuate families from the affected areas to safer places.
Rains in the catchment areas of the Nagavalli River in neighbouring State of Orissa, and heavy inflow into Thotapalli barrage of Vizianagaram district resulted in breaching its flood embankment. This has the potential of submerging the low lying areas of Komarada and Garugubilli mandals in Vizianagaram district and nearly 86 villages in Sriakakulam districts in the mandals of Vangara, Veeragattam, Regidi Amudaavalasa, Palakonda, Santha Kariviti, Amadala Vlasa an Burja, apart from the low lying areas of the Srikakulam municipality.
The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, who reviewed the situation at an emergency meeting here with revenue officials and disaster management teams, directed swift relief and rehabilitation operations.
Speedy help
According to a statement from the Chief Minister's Office, Dr Reddy directed officials to evacuate people in the low-lying areas to safer places and initiate relief operations.
Further, the CM instructed the district collectors of Vizianagaram and Srikakulam to immediately evacuate families from the affected areas to safer places and asked the Commissioner, Disaster Management to alert the district police to initiate coordinated steps in evacuating people from the affected areas.
