TRAI hauls up BSNL for ignoring orders

Blames BSNL for increase in congestion levels

New Delhi , July 3

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has hauled up state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) for repeatedly ignoring and not complying with various orders issued by the telecom regulator.

TRAI has shot off a missive to BSNL listing out at least four instances where the public sector company has not fully adhered to the regulatory norms related to interconnection, addressing consumer complaints and data related to quality of service.

In a letter sent to BSNL on June 26, the telecom regulator said that the delay in responding to the issues was causing problems for consumers, apart from causing revenue losses to BSNL itself.

On the issue of offering points of interconnection, TRAI said that despite holding a number of meeting with BSNL, the congestion levels at the points of interconnection were only increasing. The reason for the increasing congestion level is the delay by BSNL in giving interconnection to private operators, said TRAI.

TRAI had said that the private operators were using the delay by BSNL as an excuse. The protesting private operators later filed a case against the TRAI show-cause notice. TRAI has now called BSNL for a meeting on July 10.

TRAI pointed out that it was yet to receive an action taken report on consumer complaints, which was forwarded to BSNL.
