Policy Industry & Economy - Steel Government - Politics Marketing - Channels and Franchises SAIL plans SC/ST quota in selection of dealers Ambarish Mukherjee
New Delhi , July 3 The Ministry of Steel has decided to introduce quota system in selection of dealers for State-owned steel companies. The Minister for Steel, Mr Ram Vilas Paswan, has directed SAIL to implement the quota system for members of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes; the company is currently in the process of appointing one dealer each in every district of the country. SAIL short-listed 200 dealers in 2005-06. However, the quota was not taken into consideration during that selection process. Now, SAIL would be finalising names for another 350 dealers by August-end and the quota system would be implemented, officials said. "The quota would be part of the total figure. We have already appointed around 200 dealers and would be appointing another around 350 dealers by August 31. Then we would be appointing another 150-200 dealers. In all, out of around 700, the quota for SCs/STs would be same as in the case of jobs." They added that SAIL's commercial interests would not be compromised in the process. "The appointment of SC/ST dealers would be in the same terms and conditions as in case of any other dealer. There are no proposal for any relaxation on financial parameters for allotment of dealership to SC/ST candidates," the officials said.
