Mumbai , July 4

The Mumbai port has registered a 19.3 per cent growth in volume of traffic in the first quarter of the current fiscal.

The port handled 12.71 million tonnes of cargo during April-June as against 10.65 million tonnes in the first quarter of the last fiscal.

According to the port, bulk cargoes boosted the port's traffic. Commodities such as pulses, wooden logs, sugar, iron and steel and motor vehicles were among the major contributors to the quantum jump in the traffic.

During the first quarter, the port handled 2,46,167 tonnes(10,863 tonnes).

Similarly iron and steel and wooden logs also showed an increase of 20 per cent.

Motor vehicles passing through the port also registered an increase of 84 per cent.

According to the port authorities, if the current trend continues, in the current year, the Mumbai port will be able to exceed the traffic of 44.19 million tonnes handled in 2005-06.
