Naxal menace: Centre assures logistics support to AP

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , July 4

The Centre has assured the Andhra Pradesh Government that it would provide logistics support by providing helicopters in tackling naxalites.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Mr V.K. Duggal, Union Home Secretary, said the Home Ministry would either provide helicopters or reimburse the amount spent by the State on helicopter use. He, however, said that there was no need yet to use UAV (unmanned aerial vehicles).

He also clarified that the logistic support was not meant for direct combat with the naxalites but only to provide food, men and other support to the police forces.

Mr Duggal, who was earlier closeted with top police officials here, was all praise for Andhra Pradesh in successfully tackling naxalites and terrorists.

Asked whether there was any link between the Nepalese and Indian Maoists, he said there was no input that suggested any physical links between the two parties. But there were ideological and e-mail relationships. He also said that there were no links between ISI and Maoists.

Stating that violence was on the decline nationally, he however admitted that there was increase in violence in Chhattisgarh, following the Salwa Judum phenomenon there and AP's action against naxalites.

Mr Duggal said the Government has convened a meeting of naxal-affected States on July 21.
