Left plans weeklong stir against price rise

Our Bureau

New Delhi , July 4

The four Left parties supporting the UPA Government stated again on Tuesday that the Government was not adhering to the National Common Minimum Programme (NCMP) or the concerns of the Left and shedding crocodile tears over the spiralling price rise.

The Left leaders, after holding a three-hour meeting here, said that a week-long agitation would be launched from July 13 to protest against the Government's inaction in checking the rising prices of essential commodities and the divestment policy.

The CPI General Secretary, Mr A.B. Bardhan, told reporters after the meeting that "whatever steps the Government has taken so far is too little and too late. Government has messed up the whole issue".

"We appeal to the UPA partners to intervene and see that Government reconsiders its decision to disinvest in the profitable public sector units which goes against the CMP commitment," he said, quoting a joint statement by the CPI(M), CPI, RSP and Forward Bloc, which have accused the Congress of shedding crocodile tears on the prices front.

The meeting was attended by Mr Prakash Karat, Mr Sitaram Yechury of the CPI(M), Mr Bardhan and Mr D. Raja of the CPI, Mr Abani Roy of the RSP, and Mr Debabrata Biswas and Mr G. Devarajan of the Forward Bloc.
