Industry & Economy - Economy
Hasty and bitter

The Central Government's knee-jerk reaction to the rising prices of essential commodities is leading to one fiasco after another. After wheat, the Government seems to have slipped on the sugar front too. Just as it failed to see that wheat procurement was way below target this year, on the sugar front, it allowed exports to Pakistan till as late as a month ago. Now that domestic prices have skyrocketed, sugar exports have been banned till March next year. But in the rush to announce the ban, the Government overlooked the fact that there was a statutory obligation to export white sugar on mills that had imported raw sugar under the Advance Licence Scheme. It was left to scribes tracking the beat to point out this lapse to the Government and a corrigendum has been promised in the next few days. The outstanding export obligations are substantial, some 15-16 lakh tonnes, and with international sugar prices on the rise, a rush for exports seems very much on the cards.
