AP disputes land grant to Pak refugees

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, July 6

The Andhra Pradesh Government will challenge the decision of the settlement commissioner to assign over 200 acres prime land at Puppalaguda to the heirs of refugees from Pakistan.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Mr Dharmana Prasada Rao, Minister for Revenue, denied allegations that the Government had a role in assigning the lands. "We will fight a legal battle against the decision and defend the land," he said. "Mr D.C. Rosaiah, Revenue Secretary, had exercised his quasi judicial powers under the Displaced Persons' Compensation and Rehabilitation Act-1954 (a Central Act) while assigning the lands. The Government cannot stop him from exercising this power. We can only challenge this in the High Court, which we will do soon," he said.
