`SAFTA pact, last resort'

The State is within its rights to seek cover under the provisions of the SAFTA agreement in case the import of agricultural produce proves too large for comfort, says Mr Mullakara Ratnakaran, Agriculture Minister. Among the list of produce enjoying protection are prawns, crab, naturally occurring honey, coconut, copra, coconut oil, coconut flakes, cashew, arecanut, plantain, pineapple, tea, pepper, vanilla, cinnamon, cardamom, turmeric, cocoa and cocoa products, latex, rubber sheets, milk and coir products.
