Runaway demand for iron ore rakes

A large number of indents for iron ore rakes, 15,000 or so, are believed to be pending with the Railways' public sidings at Dongaposi, Noamundi, Barajamda, Gua, Barabil Bolani and various other iron-ore producing areas in eastern region.

While there can be little doubt that the pending figure is inflated, it is also true that the indents are outstanding because of the not-so-satisfactory loading at the sidings due to inadequate supply of empty rakes.

A steady flow of rakes at each siding, it is felt, can even lead to cancellation of fictitious indents and thus give the correct picture of the actual requirement. But, then, the supply of rakes can improve if certain steps are taken to upgrade infrastructure at the sidings.
