New Delhi , July 9

The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, would convene a conference of Chief Ministers to discuss issues pertaining to science teaching, research and improvement of higher education in India.

The Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister appraised him of the current status of science research and teaching in India and drew his attention to the urgent need for increasing investment in science, improving research output of universities and scientific research institutions and making science a attractive career option for youth.

The Council expressed concern at the sharp decline in India's share in high quality science research, and drew the attention of the PM to the rapid progress being made in other East Asian economies, particularly China. The Council called for bold measures to revitalise science in India.
