Kolkata , July 12 Tata Motors Ltd today announced the commercial launch of the Tata ACE in West Bengal. The company, which first developed and launched the "mini truck" in May 2005, hopes to sell one lakh units of the product in 2006-07. A passenger variant of the Tata ACE was also being planned. Addressing a news conference here today, Mr Prem K. Verma, Head of Sales & Marketing - Light & Small Commercial Vehicles, Tata Motors Ltd, said the product had already been launched in select markets in the South, West and North. More than 42,000 units of the Tata ACE have been sold and were plying on Indian roads. Over 60 per cent of the demand for the Tata ACE was from rural and semi-urban areas. Mr Verma said the addressable market for small commercial vehicles in the sub-one-tonne category was growing rapidly and the Tata ACE, with a payload capacity of 750 tonnes, was positioned to facilitate the "last mile connectivity" needs of commercial vehicles. Last year, the size of the Indian market for small commercial vehicles in the sub-one-tonne category had been pegged at 136,000 units. According to him, the capacity of the company's ACE manufacturing facility in Pune was being doubled from 30,000 units per annum to 60,000 units per annum. On the anvil was a greenfield project that was being set up in Uttaranchal. Mr Verma declined to divulge the investment that would go into the setting up of the proposed plant in Uttaranchal.
