Chennai , July 12 Bharat Electronics Ltd, ITI Ltd, Wipro and Tata Consultancy Services are in the fray to establish the Rs 100-crore Tamil Nadu State-wide Area Network (TNSWAN), according to information available on the Web site of the Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu, a State Government agency. The TNSWAN will be the backbone connectivity network for the State. The project will be implemented in a phased manner to establish connectivity up to the taluk level. The TNSWAN, earlier proposed as Tamil Nadu Virtual Private Network, will provide voice, data and video connectivity to improve the response time and transparency, says an earlier State Government order. It may be recalled that the Union Information Technology Ministry has sanctioned Rs 97.17 crore for the project. During the first phase, a State centre at the Secretariat and district centres at all 29 district headquarters will be established. A conference room for video conferencing will also be set up at the Secretariat and all the district headquarters. In the second phase, taluk centres will be set up at all the taluk headquarters. The connectivity from the district headquarters to the respective taluk centres will be established through suitable media for the application of voice, data and Internet. The estimated budgetary cost for the implementation of the complete network is about Rs 60 crore over a period of 10 years. The estimated budgetary cost for consultancy and the monitoring charges to the consultant is about Rs 3 crore over a period of 10 years, says a Government order issued earlier.
