Hyderabad to house race museum

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , July 12

Hyderabad will soon house what is perhaps the first race museum in the country. The Hyderabad Race Club (HRC) is setting up the museum in a 10,000 sq ft hall in its office building.

A pair of goggles worn by legendary jockey Lester Piggott of the UK, along with a book of his Epsom Derby wins, will be the immediate highlight of the museum. About 20 horse racing-related art objects have already been collected.

The Bangalore Turf Club (BTC) has contributed a rich selection, including the first volume of the Indian Stud Book, Family Tables of Racehorses, and the Bloodstock Breeders Review, according to the Chairman of the HRC, Mr R. Surender Reddy.

Mr Ali Khusru Jung, a Steward of the HRC and popular racing commentator, would be Chairman of the museum.

Mr Jung has appealed to equine lovers to contribute artefacts/memorabilia to the museum, which would be officially acknowledged.

The collection will be a tribute to efforts stretched over two centuries to sustain breeding and racing in India. It would also encourage research and discussion on the exhibits, Mr Reddy said.

In another first, the HRC is planning to introduce an SMS to enable mobile phone users receive information pertaining to race results and dividends of the Hyderabad races or any other venue on which the HRC conducts inter-venue betting.

The facility being implemented in collaboration with WiFi networks is expected to become operational from this upcoming monsoon season, he said.

Mr Reddy also urged the Andhra Pradesh Government to reduce the rate of taxation for race enthusiasts. He said that big betting punters from Andhra Pradesh are shifting base to Bangalore, as Karnataka's tax rate is four per cent against 10 per cent in Andhra Pradesh, resulting in loss of revenue to the State.
