`Statutory status will help in better data collection'

Our Bureau

New Delhi , July 12

The National Statistical Commission (NSC), which commenced operations on Wednesday, plans to leverage on its statutory backing to co-ordinate better data collection. "Earlier, statistical agencies such as CSO and NSS used to face a lot of problems in collecting data from State Governments and Central Government departments, but an autonomous body like the NSC should be able to co-ordinate things in a better manner as a statutory status would lend it teeth," said economist Mr Suresh Tendulkar, after assuming chairmanship of the Commission.

Though he admitted that it would be difficult to ensure unbiased figures, as the sources of data collection would be the same, he however, said, "We will certainly certify the figures."

Mr Tendulkar said with reforms in economy the area of data collection has become more varied and expanded the horizons of old sectors also. The four other independent members of the Commission also assumed charge in the presence of the Minister for Statistics and Programme Implementation, Mr G.K. Vasan.

"The NSC would ensure that the reports by statistical agencies are not only utilised by the Government for programme implementation but also by private sector and civil society groups," said NSC member and JNU professor Mr Amitabh Kundu.

Another member and Oxus Investments chief Mr Surjit S. Bhalla said the Commission would work towards developing a faster mechanism for collecting and interpreting data through the use of information technology.
