Site preparation work on the second phase of the all-India income-tax network is said to be almost ready, with all loose ends expected to be tied up by November.
Work is also on in full swing to set up the all-India annual information returns (AIRs) based database for speedy transmission of vital information, with the main server in Delhi, a replica in Mumbai, and a back-up facility at Chennai.
Speaking to Business Line, Mr G. Choudhuri, Commissioner of Income-Tax, Computer Operations, Kolkata said that the national database will eventually be connected to the network to facilitate nationwide tracking of key information leads culled through AIRs.
He added that as per the latest feedback available from the headquarters zone, the network is likely to be in place and become operational by January.
Describing the networking exercise as massive, he said that it would cover as many as 510 locations through 750 offices of the Department all over the country. Networking of the local zone (Kolkata) is being handled by IBM India.
Commenting on the quantum jump achieved by the Kolkata zone in computerisation, Mr Choudhuri said that on average, some 10-11 lakh returns are being processed online in 26 Commissionerates in the Bengal zone, including one at Jalpaiguri in North Bengal, involving some 350 assessment officers.
Work on the online management of records is now being taken up.
Some eight lakh additional returns are being processed by the Department's officers through stand-alone workstations; all these will eventually come under the network.
Stating that major improvements have been achieved in the area of refunds through the system of direct credit transfer to the assessee's bank, he said that the facility has now been extended to all categories of assessees.
