UP on media blitzkrieg

HANDING OUT the largesse.

Looks like it's time for a reality check in Uttar Pradesh. Newspaper offices in the capital are being flooded with press releases from the UP Government, highlighting the announcements made by the Chief Minister, Mulayam Singh Yadav, about new projects at some political rally or other, somewhere in the State. While the announced projects may or may not materialise, what intrigues some scribes is the claim of the State being revenue surplus, especially when the CM is known to announce tax concessions at the drop of a hat. The car mela in his constituency has almost become an annual affair where vehicles can be purchased without paying duties. The sugar industry too has been the beneficiary of a host of tax concessions. So where is the "surplus" revenue coming from? To top it all, Mulayam Singh has now accused the Centre of being jealous of the "economic development" in UP. Possibly the PM could learn a few lessons in developmental economics from the UP CM.
