Kolkata , July 13

The Union Ministry of Human Resources Development has sanctioned the first tranche of Rs 25 crore for the setting up of a second campus of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT-KGP) at Rajarhat New Town, in Kolkata.

Addressing newspersons here on Thursday, Mr Sanjiv Goenka, Chairman of the Board of Governors of IIT-KGP, said the setting up of the IIT-KGP Rajarhat campus over 10 acres of land would entail a total investment of Rs 250 crore, an amount that is expected to be funded entirely by the Centre.

Classes at the proposed campus are expected to begin in the 2008-09 academic year. To begin with, 600-650 students would be enrolled at the Rajarhat campus even as the total number of students at the campus would be ramped up to 2,500 in four years.

Mr Goenka said that, besides excellence in academics and research in an array of specialised areas, IIT-KGP was also focused on sponsored research and industrial consultancy.

Last fiscal, the institute earned Rs 52 crore from sponsored and consultancy projects from the Government and private organisations. The aggregate value of ongoing sponsored research and consultancy projects at IIT-KGP has been pegged at Rs 300 crore.

Mr Arjun Singh, Union Minister for Human Resources Development, will address the convocation. Degrees would be conferred on a total of 1,370 students.
