Chennai , July 13 Information technology companies need to focus more on talent management. It is not just about hiring the right people, but retaining them for a long-term is critical, according to Ms Sangeeta Gupta, Vice-President, National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom), the country's premier trade body of the IT software and services industry. And, talent management will be one of the focus areas at the Nasscom HR Summit to be held here on July 18 and 19. According to Ms Gupta, recruitment is just a number game, and companies talk about huge numbers. For instance, the top five Indian software companies plan to recruit about lakh employees during the current fiscal. Employee Stock Option is re-emerging and to retain talent, IT companies often send their employees abroad. However, one of the major complaints that the employees have is that some of the assignments they work on are not interesting and not encouraging growth. This is one of the issues that IT companies need to take care, she said. Ms Gupta said the Indian IT-ITES industry is on a high momentum path. Rampant growth, however, has come with its own set of challenges. Chief among them relates to skilled manpower resources; not only does the country has to sustain its vast pool of specialised IT-ITES talent, but also it has to ensure that it remains "industry-relevant" and "rightly skilled''. The Nasscom HR Summit 2006 will take a close look at the evolving profile of HR and the transformational role it can play within the IT-ITES industries, to make them more globally competitive.
The event will also discuss strategic directions for a sustainable HR ecosystem, creating HR architecture and will have a Nasscom-Mercer HR Best Practices Study Findings. There is also a panel discussion on `War on talent: The employers of choice, and innovative trends and strategies for compensation and performance management.'
There will also be special address and workshops on HR architecture, leadership and skill building conducted by Mr Scott A. Snell, Professor, Human Resource Studies, Cornell University, and Dr. Lawrence Wong, Visiting Professor of the NUS Graduate School of Business, Singapore, Ms Gupta said.
