The Kerala Government is expecting emergency assistance from the Centre to compensate for the damages caused by monsoon rains.
This follows the discussions the Chief Minister, Mr V.S. Achuthanandan, other Ministers and Government officials had with the Central team that visited the State to assess the damages.
The Chief Minister informed the team that the State was unable to take up relief works without Central aid. Most of those who suffered the rain fury are from the weaker sections.
He said that the State had sought Rs 149.08 crore in a memorandum submitted to the Centre recently. This was, however, based on preliminary estimates and a final figure would be arrived at after getting the details collected by district collectors.
Mr D.S. Mishra, Joint Secretary in the Union Home Ministry, who led the Central team, said there would not be any delay in getting the emergency assistance.
