In a bid to "reposition ourselves", the Employers Federation of Southern India intends to strive towards "making people employable" through organising tie-ups between educational institutions and the industry.
`Changing needs'
The Federation's new President, Mr J. N. Amrolia, told Business Line on Thursday that while the organisation would not give up its quest for changes in labour legislation, it recognises the changing needs of the day.
EFSI would take up the task of "putting things together" and liase with the Governments (for funds), educational institutions and industries to provide technical training to young men and women, Mr Amrolia, who is also an Executive Director in charge of HR with Ashok Leyland, said.
He noted that several industries were short of hands examples are welders and paper technicians. EFSI would take up pilot projects in 2-3 centres, he said.
`Seeking flexibility'
He, however, said that the Federation would interface with the Governments for changes in labour legislation, mainly seeking "flexibility" in laws.
By "flexibility", Mr Amrolia stressed that EFSI did not mean "hire and fire" policy. He said the idea was to enlarge or shrink the labour force depending upon the demand for a company's product or services.
He said that flexibility also meant less of `inspector raj', self-certification by companies (especially under the Factories Act) and more leeway in other areas such as letting women work in night shifts. The latter, he said, was of importance in industries such as garments, which employ a large women workforce.
