Logistics - Outsourcing
3PL spending on the rise

Global expenditure on outsourced third-party logistics (3PL) services across contract logistics, sea and air freight and road transport sectors, is likely to increase significantly in the next five years, according to experts.

The largest growth in demand for 3PL, it is estimated, will be in the Asia-Pacific region, which will account for almost one-fifth of the global spending of some $320 billion on 3PL services by 2010. This will happen because global manufacturing bases will gradually shift east, boosting global trade and movement of goods from east to west.

Right now, the global contract logistics market is fragmented. But the scene will change in favour of larger consolidation. Enterprises with a focus on efficiency and economy will depend more on outsourced operations than on in-house services.
