Industry Associations States - Tamil Nadu Sattur chamber seeks action on wax supply to match units Our Correspondent
Madurai , July 16 The Sattur Chamber of Commerce and Industries has urged the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Mr M. Karunanidhi, and the Union Minister for Petroleum products, Mr Murali Deora, to take action for the immediate supply of Type II wax for small match industries. In a letter to them, the Chamber Secretary, Mr P.T.K.A. Balaubramanian, had said the labourers in Virudhunagar district, especially in Sattur and Sivakasi, were fully dependent on small match industries for their livelihood, especially women. The industry was dependent only on wax as the state was not ready to destroy trees for matches.
Production halted
For the past few months, Type II wax was not available for small match Industries. Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd (CPCL) had stopped the production of wax temporarily. While type III wax was available in plenty for the manufacture of wax matches, Type II wax, which was the key product, was not available with the CPCL. Due to the scarcity of Type II wax, small match industries were compelled to shut down their factories. If this position continued many would lose their jobs. CPCL on July 10, had written a letter to the chamber stating that it had started the wax production. As the requirement of Type II wax was very important, CPCL must give first priority for the production of Type II wax and further, the distribution must be fair without any discrimination, Mr Balaubramanian said.
