Bangalore , July 17 Wipro on Monday announced that beginning September 1, the company would begin offering e-waste disposal service to its customers. "The service can be availed by our customers free-of-cost by paying nominal freight charges,'' said Mr Ashutosh Vaidya, Vice-President, Personal Computing Division, Wipro Infotech, in response to the recent challenge by Greenpeace activists in the city to the firm. Environmentalists from the Greenpeace association had recently issued a public challenge to the IT behemoth - asking it to set the trend for Indian IT firms when it comes to electronic waste. The disposal of scrapped computers by the owners and users of computers and electronics goods is a larger issue and involves all the users and owners, the entire installed base of computers and all the vendors/manufacturers in India, said Wipro in a release. "The IT industry is a progressive industry, and players globally are campaigning to generate end user awareness and influence legislation to ensure appropriate disposal of waste by end users. Likewise, the Indian industry under the aegis of MAIT (Manufacturers Association of Information Technology) has been actively promoting end user awareness and has submitted draft legislation on the matter,'' it said. On the matter of RoHS (Restriction on certain Hazardous Substances), a European law banning the use of six deadly chemicals in electrical and electronic products, the company said it is voluntarily driving efforts to maximise the usage of RoHS-compliant components.
