Awards & Honours States - Kerala Tuber Institute bags Sardar Patel award Our Bureau
Thiruvananthapuram , July 19 The Central Tuber Crops Research Institute (CTCRI) here has won the Sardar Patel Award for Outstanding Institution, instituted by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, for 2005. The institute, with a regional centre at Bhubaneswar in Orissa, carries out research on tropical tuber crops such as cassava (tapioca), sweet potato, yams, elephant foot yam and colocasia for generating technologies to enhance their productivity and utilisation potential. CTCRI is also the headquarters of the All India Co-ordinated Research Project for Tuber Crops functioning at 10 centres representing the different tuber crops-growing areas of the country. According to Dr S. Edison, Director, CTCRI, the institute maintains a rich diversity of germplasm of all tuber crops. Over the years, it has developed 45 improved varieties of tuber crops comprising 11 in cassava, 16 in sweet potato, 10 in yams, six in colocasia and one each in amorphophallus and coleus. It has also standardised agro-techniques and soil nutrient management practices to maximise production of all the major tuber crops. Besides, it has evolved integrated pest and disease management strategies to combat the major pests and diseases affecting the crops. The institute has developed many diversified and value-added products from the tuber crops that have been popularised among self-help "Kudumbasree" women groups. The tuber crops technologies generated at the institute are assessed through farmers' participatory programmes for further refinement and transfer.
