Kerala to file review petition on trawling ban extension

As many as 15,633 existing vacancies of permanent posts had so far been reported to the Public Service Commission.

Thiruvananthapuram , July 19

The Kerala Government will file a review petition challenging the Supreme Court ruling extending the ban on monsoon trawling to August 15.

The Chief Minister, Mr V.S. Achuthanandan, told newspersons after a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday that the Supreme Court would be informed of the peculiar situation prevailing in Kerala, which did not call for the extension of the trawling ban.

The 45-day ban on trawling in the State, which was imposed on June 15, is to expire on July 29.

The Cabinet also decided to file an appeal against the order of a single judge of the Kerala High Court on admissions to self-financing professional colleges in the State during the current year. The Court had directed the Government to follow the admission procedures and fee structure on the same lines as the previous year.

The Chief Minister said that the Government wanted to implement the new legislation on the self-financing colleges from the current year itself. It was against this resolve that the Government decided to file an appeal, he added.

The Chief Minister said that as many as 15,633 existing vacancies of permanent posts had so far been reported to the Public Service Commission following a Government directive to the effect to District Collectors and department heads. The directive was issued a couple of weeks ago. This was the first time in the history that such a large number of vacancies had been reported to the Public Service Commission within such a short time, he said.

Mineral sand mining

The Chief Minister asserted that there was no change in the Government policy of not allowing the private sector in the mining of mineral sands.

On the controversy over the Industry Department issuing an order to a private company allowing mining of mineral sands, he said appropriate action would be taken against those responsible for it.
