Insat to Panama ship rescue

Bangalore, July 19

ISRO's satellite-based search and rescue network has helped in saving all 30 crew-members of a Panamanian ship, the organisation said. The ship, Glory Moon, was adrift in Sri Lankan waters after a fire destroyed its communications and navigation systems on July 11. The distress beacon was working. ISRO's Insat-3A satellite immediately picked up the SOS signal and relayed it to the Coast Guard through the Bangalore centre.

As a signatory to the international search & rescue (SAR) programme on land, sea and air, COSPAS-SARSAT, the space agency has fitted its satellite with the SAR payload. ISRO said its network has helped save 1,500 lives since it was set up in 1991.
