Farmers urge Mettur dam maintenance

Our Bureau

Coimbatore , July 20

The Athur-based United Farmers Association has reminded the Tamil Nadu Government on the immediate need to undertake protective maintenance including checking seepage at the Stanley Reservoir in Mettur considering the fact that the dam is holding copious storage for unusually longer periods in recent times.

The farmers' body has pointed out that de-scaling of salt and calcium deposits gathered in the dam's tunnel buried under the water was needed in order to protect the dam's structure.

The dam is likely to receive more inflows in view of the heavy discharges being planned from Kabini and K.R. Sagar dams in Karnataka. In this situation, the PWD authorities need to step up the water release from Mettur dam so as to bring down the water table below 71 feet.
