Visakhapatnam, July 22

Praising Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) for its performance during the past five years, which enabled it to wipe out all accumulated debts and undertake capacity expansion with its own resources, the Union Minister of State for Steel, Dr Akhilesh Das, has exhorted the plant to reduce further the cost of production and build up its image in the international market. The Minister, on a three-day visit to the plant from Thursday, made these remarks on Friday after visiting the various production units. Mr Y. Sivasagara Rao, Chairman and Managing Director of VSP, explained how the plant was being operated with 120-125 per cent capacity utilisation. The Minister also wanted the steel plant to acquire smaller plants outside Andhra Pradesh to strengthen its base. He met the representatives of the Steel Executives' Association. On Saturday, he will meet the representatives of trade unions.
