A historic take-off

A few days ago, a Boeing 747-400 cargo plane belonging to China Airlines, Taiwan's biggest carrier, flew from Taipei to Shanghai, marking the first direct cargo flight between the island and the Chinese mainland. With this, the 56-year-old ban imposed by Taipei goes, paving the way for a historic beginning of a regular chartered cargo flights between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait.

China Airlines, it is hoped, will make a few more chartered cargo flights on the route shortly. The lifting of the ban by Taipei is believed to have been taken at the insistence of Taiwan's business community who want to maintain regular connections with the mainland. Many Taiwanese companies have their outfits in the mainland and would like their factories there to be supplied with vital components and other materials. According to reports, Taiwanese business leaders are also in favour of setting up direct shipping services between the two nations.
