Disbursing low-interest loans to fishermen

Mangalore , July 23

The South Kanara and Udupi districts' Cooperative Fish Marketing Federation has urged the Karnataka Government to release Rs 10 crore to disburse low-interest loans to fishermen.

Addressing presspersons here, Mr Gangadhara Suvarna, President of the federation, said that the Government has come out with an scheme to disburse loans to fishermen at four per cent interest rate.

Stating that nearly Rs 10 crore is needed for disbursing loans to fishermen, he said the federation is ready to take the responsibility of disbursement of loans to fishermen and their repayment, if the Government is ready to extend that amount to it.

Added to this, there is a need to set up a Rs 5-crore revolving fund to disburse loans to fisherwomen.

Seeking financial assistance from the Government in this matter, he said the federation would provide guarantee to these loans also.

During 2005-06, various fisheries cooperative societies under the federation disbursed loans to the tune of Rs 86.06 lakh to 1,565 fisherwomen.

MAKES PROFIT

The federation registered a profit of Rs 79.76 lakh during 2005-06 as against Rs 26.79 in the previous year, he said.

The total business of the federation stood at Rs 27.99 crore (Rs 21.14 crore) during the period.

It marketed diesel worth Rs 20.35 crore to fishermen. Fish catch worth Rs 7.18 crore was sold in the market during the period.

RETAIL OUTLETS

Mr Suvarna said that the federation is planning to open `fresh fish' retail outlets in various districts in Karnataka.

With this, the federation wants to provide an opportunity to customers in the Karnataka market to taste fresh fish.

There are also plans to set up ice-manufacturing units at Mulihithlu and Bunder in Mangalore.

The federation has branches in Mangalore, Malpe, Hangarkatta, Hejmady, Uppunda and Gangolli fisheries harbours.
