Port, dock workers to hold demonstration today

Our Bureau

Mangalore , July 24

The dock and port workers, affiliated to various trade unions, will organise a protest demonstration in front of the administrative office of the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) on July 25.

Addressing presspersons here on Monday, Mr N. Ramachandra Gowda, President of the New Mangalore Port Staff Association, said that the ruling of the National Industrial Tribunal, Kolkata, in the industrial dispute between the employers of the major ports and their workmen would affect the activities of the port. "The nature of work differs from port to port. The award of the tribunal, if implemented, will be counter productive and jeopardise the port activities," he said.

`Put off award implementation'

Requesting the Union Government to keep in abeyance the implementation of the award, he said the matter should be discussed with the representatives of federations of dock and port workers.

Mass demonstrations will be held in front of the administrative offices of 11 major ports on July 25.

At the New Mangalore Port, members of the Karnataka Dock and General Workers' Union, the New Mangalore Port Staff Association and the New Mangalore Port and Dock Workers' Union will stage a demonstration at 1.30 p.m., he added.
