It is planning to roll out the FWP service in other cities like Madurai, Tiruchy and Chennai soon.

Coimbatore , July 25

Telecom service provider Airtel has launched the `Airtel Mega' - Fixed Wireless Phone (FWP) services here. It is planning to roll out the FWP service in other cities like Madurai, Tiruchy and Chennai soon.

"We will be targeting to introduce this product to at least 5,000 customers in Tamil Nadu every month," said the Chief Executive Officer of Bharti Airtel Ltd (Mobility), Tamil Nadu, Mr P. Swaminathan.

He said the FWP service, which operated on the GSM network would be rolled out across Airtel's wireless network in the State in a phased manner. With the introduction of this service the company completed its total telecom services portfolio for all segments, he said.

On trends, he said the fixed line market was grossly underserved in the country, particularly in smaller towns and villages, largely because of inadequate infrastructure. "Between December last and April 2006, the mobile market grew by 2.3 per cent to touch 12.5 per cent, while the fixed line penetration (during this period) dipped by 0.2 per cent to 6.3 per cent," he said.

The company is hoping that with the introduction of Airtel Mega, it would be able to make accelerate the fixed line growth rate by making phones available to all customers "within arm's reach of desire."

The FWP will be available in three sleek European-styled phone models. The desktop models — CSI 910 and Telular SX6P 300G — are Internet-enabled but the cordless phone — Telian FGD 8900 - is not.
