Output likely to be lower in 2006

Kochi , July 25

The tight supply position in the world market seems to have pushed up the exports of Indian pepper during April-June, while exports from other origins such as Brazil and Ecuador have declined.

World pepper output, according to International Pepper Community (IPC) is likely to be significantly lower in 2006 as the production in Brazil, Indonesia, Ecuador and even India is expected to slip.

Shipments from India during April-June increased to 4,700 tonnes worth Rs 38.74 crore from 3,458 tonnes valued at Rs 32.34 crore in the same period last year.

Drop in unit value

However, the unit value dropped to Rs 82.42 a kg from Rs 93.51 a kg.

Meanwhile, exports of whole black pepper to the US showed a gradual decline from 7,407 tonnes in 2002 to 3,828 tonnes in 2005.

However, shipments in January-May 2006 went up to 2,110 tonnes from 1,302 tonnes.

White pepper exports dropped to 177 tonnes in 2005 from 184 tonnes in 2002.

Though India topped in exports of crushed and ground pepper to the US in January-May, it was far below the volume exported in the same period last year.

Brazil shipments

As against 1,338 tonnes in January-May 2005, the volume stood at 879 tonnes in the corresponding period this year registering a decline of 34.31 per cent.

According to IPC, during January-June, total exports of pepper from Brazil dropped by 14 per cent. During this period, the country exported 11,996 tonnes compared to 13,946 tonnes during the first half of 2005. The US is still the most important market for Brazilian pepper.

Total exports of pepper from Ecuador during the period amounted to 446 tonnes, showing a decline of 55 per cent when compared to 995 tonnes during the same period in 2005. The US imports of pepper in January-May 2006 increased by 11.23 per cent to 25,256 tonnes from 23,418 tonnes in the same period last year.
