Science & Technology States - Kerala Seminar on research facilities at CSIR Our Bureau
Thiruvananthapuram , July 25 The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) seeks to open itself up to scientists and technologists in a big way. The CSIR proposes to enlarge its science support base by roping in even school students. But despite the best efforts of the CSIR, awareness about these facilities continues to be low. Many valuable research opportunities often go unnoticed by deserving candidates. This has prompted the Thiruvananthapuram Chapter of the Public Relations Society of India (PRSI) in association with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) to organise a seminar on `Research Facilities in CSIR' at the C-DAC Amphitheatre here on August 9.
ASSETS
CSIR's creative assets are its 10,000-plus highly qualified scientists and technologists. The CSIR is credited with having supported more than 50,000 senior research associates so far. Till recently, the CSIR schemes catered to post-graduate and Ph.D students only. It has now devised special programmes to attract undergraduate and school students. Every year, the top 50 students at the secondary school examination (Class X) from the CBSE, ICSE and State Board streams, who wish to pursue science, are allowed to do project work at one of the CSIR labs. Prof T.K. Chandrashekar, Director, Regional Research Laboratory - Thiruvananthapuram (RRL-T), will deliver the keynote address at the seminar. An internationally renowned scientist who has won prestigious recognition, he will dwell on the enormous opportunities for research available within the CSIR in various advanced branches of science. This will be followed by a presentation Dr B.C. Pai, Deputy Director, RRL-T. An interactive session with the speakers has also been arranged.
