IIM-B seeks time to implement OBC quota

Our Bureau

Bangalore , July 26

The Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, will need at least three-four years to implement the 27 per cent OBC quota as recommended by the Union HRD Ministry. Speaking to presspersons here after a meeting of the Institute Board members, Prof Prakash G. Apte, Director, IIM, said the institute has to increase the intake by 54 per cent to accommodate the 27 per cent OBC students and this hike will be done in a staggered manner in about four years time. "Right now, our intake is around 240 and eventually the increase will be 54 per cent of that," he stated. Lack of faculty and infrastructure such as student dormitories and classrooms, were some of the reasons for the phased implementation of the quota, he pointed out.

IIM-B currently has 73 faculty staff and the approved strength is 89, "which means we are falling short of 16 teachers," he said. "With increase in intake, we'll eventually need faculty of 110," he added.

The board members, comprising the Chairman, Mr Mukesh Ambani, Mr Sunil Alagh, Mr S.N. Agarwal and Ms Kiran Mazumdar Shaw among others, also discussed revising faculty compensation and new construction projects. The institute currently stands on 100 acres of land and will need an additional 15-20 acres for the new project. "The cost of the expansion plan is in the order of Rs 50 crore, excluding land cost which will be around Rs 30 crore."

Professor Apte said the institute is expecting the Government to fund the project.
