New Telecom Policy on the anvil

Our Bureau

New Delhi, July 26

The Minister of State for Communications & Information Technology, Dr Shakeel Ahmad, on Wednesday informed the Lok Sabha that the Government proposed to evolve a new National Telecom Policy.

The policy has been in the making for the past two years, but the Government is grappling with some controversial issues such as spectrum allocation. The policy is intended to be comprehensive encompassing various aspects of the telecom sector including spectrum allocation, technology, telecom equipment manufacturing, R&D and deregulation.

Issues relating to simplification of procedures, value added services and quality of service will also be addressed.

Dr Ahmad said that the Communications Ministry is engaged in detailed consultation with various stakeholders and therefore, no definite time frame can be given for finalisation of the National Telecom Policy.
