Bangalore , July 27

Intel has begun the `desktop' war for processors with its new range of dual core chips.

The Core 2 Duo range of desktop (code-named Conroe) and laptop processors (code-named Merom) are now available in India. Five processors for desktop PCs and five for laptops have been unveiled. The desktop processors are priced between $183 and $530, with a high-end processor called Core 2 Extreme X6800 priced at $999. Pricing for laptop processors were not revealed, but laptops based on Core 2 Duo will be available by end-August.

More efficient

The new chips will show a 40 per cent improvement in performance and are also 40 per cent more energy efficient than the last generation Intel's chips. "To reduce the power drawn, we tuned the speed of the CPU to the application - apps that require lesser power would get lesser," explained Ms Charlotte Lamprecht, Director, Digital Home Brand Management, Intel Corporation. The chips are also smaller, manufactured using the 65 nanometre process method, as opposed to the older 90 nm silicon processing. Original equipment manufacturers (PC makers) will be able to design PCs with smaller fans, and hence the desktop will shrink.

Intel expects `techxperts' - early adopters of technology, such as gamers, animating professionals and bloggers - to take to the Core 2 Duo systems. The new processors arrive at a high price point, but the company expects prices to drop once volumes build. A dual core system would be priced just under Rs 30,000, according to Mr Ramamurthy Sivakumar, Managing Director (South Asia), Intel Technology India. He said he expected small and medium businesses to adopt Core 2 Duo in India.

Intel now has three brands spanning across all segments — Celeron is the entry-level processor, Pentium the mid-range and Core 2 Duo is meant for the PC enthusiast. Competitor Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) also offers dual core chips - the Athlon FX62 for desktops, Opteron for servers and Turion X2 for laptops. AMD recently announced `energy efficient' processors, with up to 40 per cent reduction in power. AMD has 23 per cent of the desktop market share worldwide, and has a similar figure in India.

Multi-tasking

A dual core chip has two cores, or computing engines, on the same chip. This allows the computer manage multiple tasks simultaneously. So the PC lets the user edit a high-resolution image while listening to streaming online radio and running a virus scan in the background.
