Ceiling for profession tax

This refers to "Profession tax through the ceiling" (Business Line, July 29): The demand for enhancement of ceiling cannot be considered unreasonable.

However, given the nature of revenue-starved State governments (or the Municipal Corporations, as the case may be), it is necessary to lay down some reasonable restrictions on power to collect profession tax. Two possible solutions are:

At any given time an individual's profession tax liability per month should not increase by more than Rs 100

In a block of five years, the tax should not be enhanced more than once.

Also, the time has come to collect profession tax from well-to-do farmers.
